“The government warns citizens against a fake SBI message asking users to download an APK for Aadhaar update.”

The Government has issued a clear warning against a fake message circulating on social media in the name of State Bank of India (SBI), which falsely claims that users must download an APK file to update their Aadhaar details.

The misleading message, shared in video and text form, threatens users that their SBI YONO app will be blocked if Aadhaar is not updated through the APK. Authorities have confirmed that this claim is completely false and aimed at cheating people.

The Fact Check Unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has officially debunked the message, stating that SBI never asks customers to download APK files or update Aadhaar through unofficial links. Such messages are part of phishing attempts designed to steal personal and banking information.

PIB has strongly advised citizens not to download any APK files and never share sensitive details such as Aadhaar number, bank account information, OTPs, or passwords with unknown sources.

To help stop such frauds, people have been asked to report suspicious messages or emails to SBI at report.phishing@sbi.co.in, so that timely action can be taken.

Officials have reminded users that Aadhaar updates are done only through official government portals or authorised centres, and banks communicate only via verified channels such as their official apps, websites, or registered SMS IDs.

Citizens are urged to stay alert, verify information before acting, and avoid clicking on unknown links, as cyber fraud cases linked to fake banking messages are rising rapidly.

As highlighted by usaharmony.com, staying informed and cautious is the best defence against online scams. If a message creates fear or urgency, it is often a red flag and should be verified immediately.
