Ratan Naval Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons and a towering figure in Indian industry, passed away on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at the age of 86. He died at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness.
Ratan Tata, who led the Tata Group to global prominence through major acquisitions like Tetley, Corus Steel, and Jaguar Land Rover, was known for his visionary leadership and philanthropy. Under his stewardship, the Tata Group expanded globally while staying true to its ethical and social values.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other political leaders expressed grief, hailing Tata as a “visionary business leader and compassionate soul.” Tata’s last rites will be conducted with full state honors, and his body is currently kept for public viewing at Mumbai’s National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) until 3:30 pm on Thursday. Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the funeral on behalf of the Government of India.
Ratan Tata’s contributions extended beyond business, with his philanthropic efforts in education, healthcare, and rural development touching millions of lives through the Tata Trusts. His final social media message, posted just days before his passing, reflected his humility, thanking people for thinking of him.
Tata’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations, as his life exemplified leadership with integrity, innovation, and compassion.
